These exciting young groups presented a mix of traditional barbershop, Gershwin, Ellington, Queen, The Ink Spots (close-harmony arrangements by The King's Singers, Swingles and James Clements) and part songs. The Merrell Barbershop Quartet was formed in 2003 by students at the University of Manchester and soon acquired a fine reputation. Since graduation in 2005 the Quartet has continued to sing together under the direction of second tenor Jim Clements. The Coupland Consort was founded in 2004 by baritone, Marcus Farnsworth, with the aim of blending the ensemble skills of choral singing with the drama of solo vocal performance. It has delighted audiences throughout the UK including Manchester Cathedral, Southwell Minster and at the Lymm Festival in 2006. Jim Clements was a chorister at Rochester Cathedral, continued singing at Tonbridge School, and is now a Layclerk at Southwark Cathedral. He is gaining a reputation as a composer and arranger, and is currently completing arrangements for The King's Singers. |
