EGERTON FILM SOCIETY presents
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo, Anne Vernon
This is a truly unique film, which its 5 Oscars and other awards demonstrate. In 1957 Cherbourg, 16-year-old Genevieve is in love with 20-year-old Guy, but her mother opposes the match since they are so young.
When Guy leaves for his army service in colonial Algeria, Genevieve is desolate and upset only to receive one letter from him in two months. Her mother seeks to fill the gap by introducing kind diamond-merchant Roland Cassard, who is smitten with Genevieve.
The story is told in song and successfully combines the operatic genre with a modern and poignant tale of ordinary life in France in the mid 20th century. A perfect starter to the Egerton Music Festival weekend.
“Demy, his cinematographer Jean Rabier and production designer Bernard Evein created an operatic masterpiece of romanticism, which makes a modest but effective antidote to the harsh era of cynicism that has pervaded world cinema ever since.” Washington Post
“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg has stood the test of time as beautifully as Deneuve and seems likely to enchant future generations as fully as it has audiences over the past four decades.” Los Angeles Times
“A glorious romantic confection unlike any other in movie history.” Washington Post
